Bill, a 20-year veteran to the home inspection business, realized his passion for building performance after noticing that this portion of a structures’ systems is often over looked when building or remodeling. After inspecting thousands of crawl spaces and noticing only a few of them performing well, it became a focal point of his inspections and his education. His journey into the building sciences began in 2009 when he received his BPI Certification, purchased high tech equipment to evaluate building performance, and then obtained his HER Rater’s Certificate in 2015. His passion is to educate all parties involved in the construction process on how a building works as a system. All parts work together to give the sum of the building’s performance. For instance, if the attic is not ventilating properly, the shingles could wear out prematurely. If the crawl space is not insulated adequately, pipes could freeze. It is Bill’s mission to educate builders, contractors, home and building owners about the importance of good building performance.
McKenzie TompkinsMcKenzie, after pursuing an honors project in education, found himself at a career crossroads. He promptly obtained his HERS Rater Certification and began seeking more opportunities for advancement. He holds a degree in Renewable Energy with an emphasis on HVAC. Building performance has now commanded his attention and he enjoys energy modeling and performance testing these projects. After obtaining his Energy Star Certification, he has been successful in registering a few local projects for Net Zero Energy. McKenzie also has proven to be very successful in helping residential and commercial builders with the Commcheck and Rescheck processes for permit acquisition. It is McKenzie’s mission to help builders implement a cost effective thermal envelope, complimented with energy efficient mechanicals, a ventilation strategy, and a water reduction plan. He also partners with numerous Habitat for Humanity Affiliates across Northern Michigan to help those needing a hand up.
